You want to rent a car - for yourself or your boss. What exactly do you need to know?

Comparison shopping on the Internet to get the best deal might be a good move. On the other hand it can be time consuming and you just might not know where to look (tip # 1: check out carrentals.com for some of the best deals).

If you need assistance in determining how to rent a car, here are the remaining four tips that can help you do it right.

What it Takes to Rent a Car

Before you even start to comparison shop, you need to figure out what kind of car you are going to rent. This doesn't mean a specific model. It refers to the body type - sub-compact, compact, mid-size, luxury; the less expensive and smaller the car, the less expensive the rental fee. Be forewarned that the classification system can vary among car rental services.

So tip #2, determine your budget and purpose to figure out what size works best for you. If you're carrying bowling balls and golf equipment along with two traveling companions, you'll need more room than if you're alone with just a single suitcase. Knowing in advance will also help you avoid making the wrong - perhaps expensive - decision.

You should also know that car rental companies place minimum qualifications on renters. The minimum age ranges from 21 to 23 years old, and you'll need a valid unrestricted driver's license. In addition, you may need to have proof of insurance, as well as employment, along with a credit card. Note that some rental car companies will check your driving record before renting to you and they may reject you if you don't meet the company standards.

Once you've figured out the car size you'll need, the next step will be to determine how to get the best price. Tip #3 is shop around.

If you're making your plane reservation on line, many of these same websites offer companion deals if you rent your car through them, too. And since, according to the experts, many rental car companies increase their rates as reservations come in and their fleets become booked, you should make your plans as soon as you can to keep from paying a higher fee. That means tip #4 is book your flight and car together.

Speaking of booking, some people suggest that you book the smallest car you can - to save money - but ask about a free upgrade when you pick the car up. Sometimes rental agencies have extra cars in certain classes and may be offering discounts. Be prepared, however, to drive the smaller car if it doesn't work out.

What to Look for Before You Sign

Know that before you can rent the car you will need to sign a contract. So tip #5: know what you're signing.

Sometimes there are additional charges that may increase the base rate. These can include collision damage waiver (CDW) fees, personal accident insurance, airport surcharges and drop-off fees, fuel charges, mileage fees, taxes, additional-driver fees, underage-driver fees, out-of-state charges, and equipment-rental fees (for items such as ski racks and car seats).

One of the biggest decisions to consider is the selection of CDW. The rental company will encourage you to take it; however, you can decline it. With it, the rental company pays damages to the car only. There is no bodily injury or personal property coverage. Without it, you assume responsibility for accidents or damage to the car. If you have car insurance, verify with your carrier before you drive that you are covered, and you will not need this extra cost. If you are unclear about any dollar amount you see on your contract, ask about it.

Renting a car is mostly a matter of taking your time to do it right. Investigate your options and know what the best deal really is for you and your boss.
