Once we've learned the necessary knowledge and skills to "get us by" in our careers and everyday life, it's easy to become complacent and non-responsive to change. There are many people who end up reaching a learning plateau and are just comfortable with the knowledge they have.

Realistically, with our advanced and ever-changing technology, continuous education has become an essential part of our everyday lives. Expanding our technical skills to upgrade our careers (or even change careers altogether) can seem complicated and overwhelming. It may seem easier to sit back and let the rest of the world gain new knowledge. But learning new skills can improve your confidence, boost your self esteem, and increase your overall income. It can also improve brain power, helping us live longer healthier lives.

Learning a new skill does not have to be complicated! Here are five tips for developing your knowledge base.

Reading and Researching

Finding new information is an essential part of learning a new skill. The Internet and your local bookstore or library will provide you with excellent advice and allow you to learn at your own pace.

Go Back to School

Learning in a classroom setting, with an instructor available to answer any question you may have, can be a helpful way to learn new skills. Not only can an instructor provide you with useful information and immediately answer any questions you have, but your peers will be learning with you, providing you with more opportunities to receive feedback and hear answers to questions you may not think of.

Go to Sleep!

A new study out of the University of Chicago has concluded that a good night's sleep helps us retain information, providing the brain with more memory and the ability to stabilize the brain's learning power. With the proper sleep, memory loss is restored and the ability to stay focused improves.

Learning by Doing

The "hands on" approach is an excellent way to acquire a new skill. Many people retain information faster and easier by doing what they are learning. If you are unfamiliar with the new Outlook email software or MS Excel, for example, it is usually much more useful to open the program and become familiar with your own eyes and hands rather than reading about it. In order to learn how to create a somewhat complicated database such as a pivot table in Excel, you should know the basics before jumping in; however, it will probably take a little trial and error before you get comfortable enough to incorporate such a new skill into your business life.

Be Patient and Practice!

Learning a new skill takes time. While it is possible, many people cannot pick up new information and skills overnight. Take time out of your day, every day, to practice. If you are learning to type, for example, set aside an hour each day to type a different set of sentences. As long as you have patience and give yourself time to learn, you will be a master at any skill you put your mind to!
