Virtual Learning: Are Online Classes Right for You?

So what kinds of classes can you take online? Virtually (no pun intended) anything! Online classes are not limited to course matter offered through Universities. You can sign up for less formal classes in almost any subject matter. You may not get a degree or certification at the end of the course, but you will learn something. Just Google the word "tutorial" followed by your topic of interest. "Tutorial Spanish" returned several free courses including the Study Spanish website which offers basic through advanced Spanish classes. The course includes podcasts and even quizzes to check your progress. A similar search for "Tutorial Accounting" returned The Small Biz U which offers a similar class in business accounting. My guess is that you could learn to throw pottery, weave baskets, or carve tree houses if you were so inclined, all without leaving your home.

But if your goal with an online course is more serious in nature, if you are looking for an advanced degree or a career required certification, you might want to consider these questions before hitting "enter" on your keyboard.

Computer Comfort Level

This may sound ridiculously obvious, but your computer knowledge is something to consider. Have you ever posted comments on a discussion board? Are you comfortable navigating complex websites? Your coursework, communication with teachers, and interaction with other students will all be done online. You will need strong writing skills to be an effective communicator. Make sure you are comfortable communicating through this medium.

Monitor You Motivation

Online courses take self-discipline. You may be opting for this virtual course because you need a flexible schedule, but this same flexibility might be your downfall. Be sure you are disciplined enough to stay on top of coursework and assignments even if you don't have to answer roll call each week.

Time Management

Many people mistakenly think that virtual classes take less time. In fact, online courses will generally take as much of your time as a traditional course. You will save on commuting time, and on the cost of gas, but the time you spend actively participating, studying and preparing for the course will even out in the end.

People Factor

The reflection in your computer monitor may be the only face you see throughout the process. Will you miss the interaction with other students? Will you stay engaged in the course topic without ever meeting your instructor? If the answer to either of these questions is "no," you may be better off walking the campus instead of navigating the internet.

There are certainly benefits to being able to take a course from the comfort of your home. But before you enroll, make sure you have the right personality, computer knowledge and discipline to make the class work for you.
