Getting Artistic with Office Supplies

As office professionals, we spend oodles of time surrounded by certain ho-hum objects like staplers, paper clips and post-it-notes. Most of us take them for what they are: productivity tools. But, what happens when people start getting creative with these tools? Perhaps one of these artists is a former co-worker...
Eraser Sculpture
There's little information about this eraser sculpture other than a blogger with an affinity for Lucite purchased it on eBay. Much to the dismay of her significant other, the shipping charges were twice what she paid for the sculpture. At 50 pounds, this is a hefty piece of office supply art.
Pencil Chair
This one combines two of our most valued office supplies in one. This chair is made entirely of sharpened pencils. While it looks like it's straight out of a horror movie, and might be a little uncomfortable, you'll never be without something to write with.
Rubber Band Vest
I don't know about you, but I love a rubber band ball. There's just something about that spherical fun fest that makes me happy. However, I seriously doubt I have the patience to create this; let alone wear it. This vest was created by a high school student over a two year period in the 1970's. Once the student finished her vest, she actually wore it to school. She attempted to weave a skirt as well, but gave up after a few inches.
Giant Typewriter Eraser
While I hate to alienate our younger members, this was a must to include. This giant typewriter eraser is a sculpture that stands in Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle, Washington. It was created by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. Apparently Claes was first enamored by the typewriter eraser after playing with his father's growing up. Perhaps his successor will create a giant "Delete" key.
Paperclip Mouse
Ahh, you knew this one would be here but did you think it would be as detailed as this? Joshua Mantyla is an artist that first began experimenting with paperclips when he made a small flower for a girlfriend. His creativity took over and he began building bigger sculptures like the mouse here, which took him over 3,000 hours to complete.
Post-Its
I just can't help but love this one. The only information I could really get about this is that it's made completely of post-it notes. My only question is, are they the super sticky kind? There's plenty more where that came from. Apparently, post-it notes are a great medium for artists these days.
Scissor Spider
Ok, so this one creeps me out, but there's no doubt that this is a work of art. Christopher Locke made this sculpture from scissors TSA confiscated from airline passengers that he then bought at an auction. It's a hodge podge of barber and cuticle scissors melted together to create what you see here: a creepy, incredibly sharp, scissors spider.
Rubber Band Eye
I know we already have an awesome piece of rubber band art, but this one struck me as so unique, I had to include it. This is made entirely out of rubber bands by an artist named Donna McLeod. On her site, she claims that the average piece is made of 1.9 to 2.3 million rubber bands. Check out more of her unique stuff here.
If you're feeling a little artistic during your downtime, try your hand at making something unique with your office supplies. While we might not have time to complete a masterpiece such as these, there are certainly much smaller-scaled models you can create sure to impress your co-workers.
Talk about it
