Must-Have Fashions for Your Professional Wardrobe
There are a thousand different opinions as to what you should wear to the office. However, probably one of the most important things to keep in mind as you put together your professional wardrobe is to consider the type of business and the company culture of your office. Is it classic, chic or casual? Do those in management wear button-down collars and business suits or do they wear slacks and polo shirts?
While there are definitely clothing pieces that would probably work in most situations, there are a handful of must-have items that the savvy business professional should not live without.
The Little Black Outfit
Okay, for women it's traditionally known as the "little black dress." And the importance of having one in your wardrobe is that you can dress it up or down depending on the need and occasion. Experts recommend something simple with a shorter skirt, as it is more flattering on most women. For men, a conservative yet contemporary single-breasted black suit is a must for the same reason.
In addition, whether you are a man or a woman, you must have black shoes. For men, wingtips are fine, though a nice patent leather tie up and/or tasseled slip-on work well in most wardrobes. Women might want to consider having both flats and small heels on hand.
Classic Shirts
The classic white shirt is a definite fit in any wardrobe - male or female. These tops come in a variety of styles that can look trendy but not outdated. And since one shirt is never enough, especially for the men, you may want to consider having a few on hand, even some in subtle stripes and pastels.
Dress Slacks and Skirts
Both men and women should have dress slacks in their wardrobe. They can be part of a suit or purchased as separates. Black, grey and navy are the traditional colors, though olive and brown are also neutral and can add a touch of spice without looking out of place.
Women will also want one or two skirts that hit just above the knee. While it is important to try a bunch of different styles on to figure out what works best for your body type, think neutral and straight or a-line rather than floral and flouncy to keep it looking professional.
Simple Shells or Tops
Shells for under sweaters or little knit tops for under jackets are a must. Men might benefit - especially during the warmer months - from wearing polo shirts or knit pull-over tee tops in soft colors or minimal stripes.
Sweater or Jacket
Men might also want to consider cardigans or pull-over sweaters; however, having at least one sport jacket in your closet is a must. Women can wear sweater sets or a multi-purpose fitted jacket that goes with more than one pair of pants. Think tweed, a small houndstooth check or any neutral look that can go with any pair of pants - even jeans.
Speaking of jeans, depending on your organization's dress policy you might want to add a nice pair of dark jeans - not torn, faded and shabby - as well as a good trench.
One final consideration: men should have at least one conservative tie. Yes, you can also have one with hula girls or hot rods, but make sure to have at least one that communicates professionalism - think "power red." And women who wear jewelry should keep it low-key. Consider a string of beads, gold or silver chain and simple, small earrings.
