Discussion: Managing a Micromanager

In a group I facilitate, a recent discussion started regarding how to manage or deal with a "micromanager." The following suggestions were made:

1. quit the job - the aggravation is not worth it
2. communicate to the supervisor about how uncomfortable his or her actions are
3. ask the supervisor to set follow-up times and deadlines

This discussion was interesting because each professional had worked for one "micromanager" in their career and it seemed that response #1 was always the result.

To give an example of the type of behavior that was displayed by one particular manager, the story goes like this:

The manager would assign a project and every 15 or minutes (approximately) the manager would ask how it was progressing and stand behind the assistant for minutes afterwards in silence as if watching the assistant work. Every morning the manager would call the office on the way to work to talk with the assistant about what the day's expectations were. Then when the manager got into the office, a 30-45 min. meeting would ensue discussing those very topics.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle the situation?

Thanks,

Dewoun
