Each month will forus on a different topic of discussion. Join us as we kick off June 2009 to discuss The Mind Set of a Subcontractor. Group conversation will focus on:
1. Why is dedication so crucial to a subcontractor’s success?
4. What defines you as a subcontractor?
5. What personality types are more likely to succeed in the VA industry?

Imagine this is what next Monday looks like for you:

You wake up refreshed and ready to start the day. You grab breakfast, a cup of coffee or tea and head into your home office to sit down and review your scheduled appointments. You smile because you see that you are scheduled to talk to your two favorite clients this morning, who both happily pay your top fees and ONLY ask you to work on projects that you love.

You’re happily surprised when you check your email because there is a new business inquiry waiting for you.

Hello all,

Last week I just released my brand new eBook series, "How To Avoid The Top 5 Mistakes New Virtual Assistants Make". I'm very excited about sharing this information that I wish I'd had when I first started my business three years ago.

Because we have quite a few new and aspiring VAs in this group, I thought it would be great to take a moment to share some helpful tips with them. So for all of you existing VAs, can you please share one tip on a mistake to avoid and one tip they can share to be successful.

Let's offer some valuable insight for our new colleagues!

I'll get us started:

Mistake To Avoid: Don't take on more than one client at a time! It takes a significant time and energy investment to start a new client partnership. You'll want to give this new client your very best service, so when their first starting, allow them the luxury of being your new "baby" and give the new relationship the attention it needs to start off on the right foot.

Savvy Tip: Don't isolate yourself! Just because you're working virtually doesn't mean you have to work alone. Create a virtual support system for yourself that you'll have a safe place to share your triumphs, fears, questions and concerns. My recommendations for support organization are as follows:

Executive Assistant To Virtual Assistant! » Home – This is one of the very reasons I created EA->VA! To support, mentor and coach aspiring and new VAs to create successful business of their own. Write me with your questions at EAtoVA.com and look for the answers in my newsletter and on the blog. Also, feel free to comment on the blog posts. Let me and your colleagues know what you think, where you’re at and how we can support you.

AssistU (www.EAtoVA.com/AssistU) – The premier training organization for Virtual Assistance. The Admissions Team is an outstanding resource and can offer guidance and support as you begin this journey. Upon acceptance into the VTP (Virtual Training Program) you gain access to the community portal where you can interact with ALL of the AssistU VAs and Trainers. This is my FAVORITE part of AssistU! The spirit of support and collaboration there is second to none.

IVAA (International Virtual Assistants Association) - I joined IVAA when I first started my practice and the investment has paid off time and again. This group of VAs is deeply committed to supporting one another, sharing information and supporting newbies.

I look forward to hearing what you experienced VA's have to share! And new/aspiring VAs, please feel free to post your questions!

Wishing you success,

Question: Starting VA business

Hi, I am new to this group but have been wondering how to get a VA business started? What kind of funding did any of you start with. I have been wanting for a couple of years to start my own VA business but I don't have the capital. I work full time but have an out of work husband who I could employ, he has an accounting degree and has clerical work experience. But because he is out of work and the fact that I have not been in business already, I can't get a business loan. I would need some office equipment, supplies and a new computer. I just don't know where to start. Do I just put an add in the paper and do things like that at first?

Any help or ideas you can give would be greatly appreciated. Crystal

Hi all!

I have some exciting news: This morning I spoke on the phone with OA Member, Sydni Craig-Hart. You may have seen her around here - she's got a ton of great advice to offer those of us interested in the Virtual Assistance profession. Anyway, as I spoke to Sydni, it dawned on me that she is exactly what we need in this group: an incredibly motivated, experienced individual willing to share her knowledge and help answer our questions. And Sydni has agreed to do just that! She is super excited to begin leading this group, sparking discussions and answering questions. Here's a little background for you:

After 13+ years in corporate America, Sydni decided to launch her own Virtual Assistance company. She is co-founder of Craig-Hart Consulting, LLC where she specializes in helping entrepreneurs run effective, organized and efficient businesses. She is also the founder of EA to VA, a company that is dedicated to helping corporate executive assistants transition from corporate life to savvy business owner.

Pretty impressive, huh? I'm so glad to have an expert like Sydni in the OA community. If you have questions about the VA profession, what it's like, how to get started...Sydni can offer first hand information. And if you're a Virtual Assistant already, be sure to connect with Sydni and start networking!

I'm really looking forward to some lively conversations in this group!

Ok, so I'm not a VA. But I joined the group anyway. I was about "this close" to becoming a Virtual Assistant when OfficeArrow approached me and took over EA Toolbox. So now, I still want to learn all I can about the profession. It's a career that I think is so cool - and who knows, I might decide to do it at some point in the future!

Here's my question now, though: OfficeArrow is hoping to develop some tools and content specifically geared towards VAs. I have some great ideas, but I'd like your input. As a Virtual Assistant, how do you feel your job is different than that of a traditional assistant? Where do you think the two jobs are the same?

Thank you so much for your input. Looking forward to meeting some other VAs!
