The difference is price and the fact that they are not voting members in the chapter. Of course, it is our job to promote the benefits of joining a local chapter. Every month I review the membership report obtained from the IAAP website and I sort the MALs by city, then I look to see what individuals live near our chapter and send the invitations to our next meeting and information about our chapter (ie. the chapter brochure).

The advantages I highlight are the fact that they are able to network with other local professionals such as themselves, vote privileges at meetings, and also the opportunities for leadership roles within a chapter. Our IMPACT meetings are the best time to try and get MALs to convert their membership.

    Dewoun,

I may contact you before the start of the 2009/2010 year and maybe we can virtually chat about this. I'm sure all groups face the same challenge about retention and getting new members. I look forward to it and thank you for continuing the thread.

Wow - so you are an IAAP (International Association of Administrative Professionals) Member at Large...you do not belong to a particular chapter. And you live in Australia?

You are a youngster to me, I am 62, and plan to retire at 66, four short years away - A masters at any age is quite the accomplishment. I have a friend with her masters and it turned her hair gray, and crossed one eye - ok, not really, but it was tough. I have an associates, gained at age 35, and tested for administrative skills, thus my CAP, stands for Certified Administative Professional. So, my friend, what are you doing these days?
