Re: How to Get Back on Track after a Bad Performance Review
I think one of the most important things to consider with a bad review is just what it is saying. It doesn't matter how good you are at what you are doing, if the boss wants you to be doing something else. I've found that many times when I've had a less than stellar review that it's because the way I saw the job and the way the boss sees the job are two different things. When that happens, I have two choices: adapt to the boss or look for a different job. Both are equally valid choices. If the job the boss wants you to do is not one you want to be doing, then you'll only be happy in another job. But if you really like the boss and the company, then adjust to what the boss wants.
You can also negotiate. Help the boss understand that what you've been doing is important, but at the same time see the value in what needs he has that you aren't meeting. It's possible that he doesn't even understand just how much you are doing to keep him going. All he sees are needs that aren't being met. I've found this often happens with first time bosses. They really don't know what it is that you do all day. Any time you start a new job, it's a learning experience for both you and the boss. He needs to learn to utilize your skills, and at the same time you need to learn what needs he has that must be filled. |
