In addition to the professional letter, I always try to give the letter to my direct supervisor personally. It's a nice touch, and people remember those kinds of things later.

I can't stress enough offering gratitude for the position and what you've learned. Even if all you learned was that the company is horrible to work for, you've learned something *laughs*. Never burn your bridges. Always leave everyone at your old job thinking well of you. Not doing so can come back to bite you in the future.
