Make Your Skills Stand Out with a Functional Resume
If your standard resume isn't getting you anywhere, try shifting your focus a bit. The functional style resume allows you to put your skills in the spotlight, instead of your work experience - a helpful tool for those switching careers or new to the workforce.

Re: Make Your Skills Stand Out with a Functional Resume
I used this style of resume earlier this year when applying for a job which was a step above what I had previously been doing. It really did help to show that though my titles in previous positions were not quite "up to par", I had the experience and skills necessary to fill my current position. I have also helped several friends with this style of resume, and all of them at least got called in for an interview. I think it is a great way to highlight your relevant skills when that is what most potential employers are really looking for.

Re: Make Your Skills Stand Out with a Functional Resume
Here are two of my resumes. The nice thing about a functional resume is that it's easy to adapt for applying to different jobs. You can move things around, and take things in and out to make it more pertinent to the job you are applying for. These are my main two resumes. I have one targeted at lower level positions and one at executive positions, because I was losing out on interviews using just the exex resume. Those with lower positions wouldn't even interview me assuming that I wouldn't be that interested in staying. I've got others I've adapted toward hr positions and tech positions. I did another highlighting my event planning experience for another job I applied for. So you can see how adaptable this type of resume is.
As usual, I recommend Regina Powtow's book, Proven Resume's. She takes you step by step putting together a functional resume. Jodith Allen Resume Exec.doc Jodith Allen Resume Administrative Assitant.doc |
