What questions to ask in this interview?
I have a second (final) interview this coming week. The gal I'd be working for has been with the company only a few months and has never had an AA before (even with other companies). This office only has 4 people in it, who are all young enough to never had an AA. So I can't really ask questions about how they work with their assistant, given they've never had one. And they don't know what a typical day looks like, since this is a new position. So what else should I be asking so I can make a good impression and learn as much about this role as possible?

Hi Sabrina,
Can you give me some more details about the job descripton, the type of business, family owned, etc. You may want to take the lead on this and tell them what your accomplishments and results have been at previous positions. Robin |

Re: What questions to ask in this interview?
I would ask a few questions about the overall goals of the company and how this role would fit into accomplishing those goals. Also, I would ask the people you'll be working with directly what their personal work "style" is. Lastly, ask the person who you will be supporting what their biggest weakness is. Then, find a way to acknowledge how your strengths will help "fill in" for those weaknesses. This question will also show you if your new boss has self-awareness and it will be a nice warning for the things ahead

Re: What questions to ask in this interview?
Although she has never had an assistant before, you could still ask her what her expectations are of an assistant.
I once had to interview candidates to fill the position of my own manager at the time. I asked them what their management styles were. If they were to be first time managers I asked how they saw us working together; what expectations that had of me as their assistant; would they be up to giving me more challenges. In so many words, I asked if I would be doing their grunt work and nothing else. You are interviewing for a job as their employee, but in a way, they are also interviewing for a job as your employer, so ask them anything you may want to know before accepting a job. |
