Out-of-Town Job Search?
I received this question via email:

I was wondering if you have any suggestions for out-of-town Admin job searching. My husband and I are considering a move and it seems like a lot of the info out there is for “higher level” jobs. No company is going to offer relocation assistance to an Admin, nor are they going to fly an AA candidate in for an interview. I’m worried that I’m not going to be able to find a job before we move, and we can’t afford to live on what he can make alone. I’m hoping I can rely on temp work if it comes down to it, but who knows. Thanks for your help!

Re: Out-of-Town Job Search?
I've had to look for work a few times when moving to a new state. I hit Monster and Career Builder hard and emailed resumes and cover letters out to lots of postings. It's a numbers game. The more resumes you get out, the more opportunities you'll have for an interview. You're right that you may not get flown out for an interview, but you can at least have some phone interviews in preparation for when you've moved. Take care of the preliminary questions and "introductions" first and see if you are the right fit for the job, and if the job is the right fit for you.

In addition to a numbers game, it's a timing game too. Perhaps by the time you've moved, you can set up a couple of in-person interviews the week you've arrived to your new home.

It would also be good to contact as many Administrive Professional Search Firms as possible. With them, you can probably take care of all that online testing they do (which I personally don't like) and then meet face-to-face when you've moved.

Oh - in addition to numbers and timing, it's all about faith! You may not have that job when you've taped up the last box in your old home, but you can feel confident that you've done your best in preparing to get that new job as soon as possible. The first couple of weeks may be tough (rice and beans for dinner, Mickey D's for lunch, and no Starbucks for a while), but you'll get through it. Most all of us have!

((Also, you should post where you're moving to. Maybe there are some folks on OfficeArrow that can help you out!).

Best of luck to you!

Ha! That was my question. I did fly out for an interview and after that we decided that it would actually be cheaper for us to just move and see what happens. I'm still looking, though I think it's going to be easier once we move. Less than two weeks now! I am signed up with a staffing firm out there and need to send my resume to another. We'll see how it goes. Oh, and we're moving to Omaha, NE. Thanks!
