In my opinion, a cover letter is a way to explain why you are interested in a particular company and why you would be a good fit. It's an opportunity to discuss your strengths as well as let the company know that you've done your research on them. It goes beyond listing your accomplishments and focuses more on the relationship you'd like to form with the company of interest - this is why cover letters should always be customized!

With the economy in the state it's in, with more and more people out of work, employers are getting record numbers of resumes for every position advertised. You need to make your resume stand out. Your cover letter can do that.

In your cover letter (which, as Lauren says, should be custom for each application), address exactly what experience you have that they are looking for. Don't make them wade through your resume looking to see if you have what they want.

The cover letter is also a good way to show the potential employer that you 1)know how to properly layout business correspondence, 2)can spell properly and use proper grammar, 3)know proper etiquette for business correspondence. This is your chance to impress. Don't blow it.
