How hard would it be to change careers?
Hello everyone. I'm a nurse and have been for the past 13+ years. I've been running a private practice for the past 6 years. I've been integral in everything from, helping to find space, mailing out letters, establishing accounts with ISP, phone, messaging service. Ordering medical and office supplies, maintaining par. I also handle physician credentialing with insurance companies and the hospitals she's affiliated with. I schedule lunches and dinners with drug reps. I've been on call 24hrs even while on vacation (which limits where and how often I can go).
My point is, I'm looking for a change in careers. I'm seriously considering a position as an Executive assistant or a Personal Assistant. I'm highly organized, in addition to the duties above, I am still a nurse, so I have plenty of charting and documenting to do before filing, therefore establishing my proficiency at multitasking. I also do her billing, which keeps me quite busy. I feel that I would be well suited for an Executive/Personal Assistant role. P.S. I was a former travel agent for about 10 years. I still have contact info on travel suppliers, etc. P.P.S. I live in Connecticut but would consider traveling to NYC for the right job. What are your thoughts? Do you think I should go for it? |

Go gucci211! Its a scary thought, but switching careers can be a great thing! It sounds like you're well qualified, so I am sure you will be an asset to any organization that hires you!
The biggest thing that helped me transition to my new job was going into it knowing I would be a bit stressed and overwhelmed with the different procedures and expectations at my new company, although after being on call 24 hours a day I'm sure you're used to a pretty high level of stress! Good luck with the job hunt! |

I say, totally go for it! It sounds like you have some great experience that will translate nicely into another field. If it's something you think you'll enjoy, there's no harm in giving it a try. If it doesn't work out, you can always go back to what you're doing. Life is too short to sit around wondering what could have been.
I wrote an article on How to Break into a New Career (with No Experience in the Field). You might find some helpful info there. Good luck! I'm sure the right thing will happen! |

Re: How hard would it be to change careers?
I think you should absolutely go for it. Some good advice would be to work with some recruiting agencies and begin as a temporary worker. This is a great way to sort of test drive this career while also getting paid pretty well. Your'e guaranteed that the pay will be competitive and most importantly, it gives you a chance to also experience different office settings and atmospheres.
I have been an administrative assistant for over 5 years now and I love meeting new people and doing different tasks all the time. Working as a temp has fulfilled that desire and really helped me to update and acquire new skills while building my confidence. Best of luck! P.S. Here are some good agencies in NYC that I highly recommend: -Segue Staffing (greatest assignment from them was at Burberry Corporate offic) -Supporting Cast -Forrest Solutions -OfficeTeam -AppleOne -Tempositions (they also have a health division if you don't want to stray too far just yet) |

A little late, but I would also suggest checking out The Duncan Group. It's a company that matches assistants to executives.
Melba Duncan is an expert in the field. She started out as an assistant and opened the Duncan Group about 15 years ago and it has been very successful. Good Luck!!! __________________
