You can mention the gap in a cover letter that accompanies your resume; but my recommendation is to leave it out completely. You do not want that to distract from your accomplishments. It will most likely be brought up in an interview, and which time you can explain.

I agree with Robin, leave it out. However, if and when you get the interview and the question is asked, politely explain why the gap whether it was due to family problems, medical, or downsizing from previous job. If you were terminated, I would use the word "downsizing".
