HR Refusing to give Job Qualifications
I recently had a yearly review and on my review form my job title stated admin. asst III. I ask my boss to explain what was the admin. asst III qualification, because in previous reviews I didn't have admin. asst III on my reviews. He stated according to HR this was my official title and that out of the three admin asst in the dept I was the lower - admin. asst III(out of the three I have the most seniority). My boss and I look at the job description for admin. asst II and we couldn't find any difference in the job duties and responsibilities.

I contacted HR requesting the qualifications for Admin Asst I,II&III. The HR director indicate the company would not be using these level any longer, however, If I wanted to move up to admin II, I could take on a large scope of work and more responsibility. I am very confused because I still don't know what the qualifications are for the admin asst levels, how can I plan a career path when I don't know what I am trying to achieve. I also found out that two previous admin. asst with less experience and no degree have been hired as admin. asst II(which pays $10,000 more in salary). When I was hired four years ago I had my BA & MA and 10yrs office management experience, none of the previous admin. asst had degrees or that amount of experience. Also, my previous reviews have been excellent, I am not understanding how I was place in the lower level, and no one can tell me at this point. Anyone have any suggestions of how I can get HR to respond to my inquire.

Re: HR Refusing to give Job Qualifications
To be honest, I think you'll have a lot more response from HR if your direct supervisor speaks to them. I'm not sure how large your company is, but in a previous job of mine, if something involved salary or title, the only person HR would listen to was a supervisor.

I would explain to your boss that somehow you've been classified as the lowest admin level, and explain the differences you've stated here, and back it up with your past reviews. Good luck!

I agree. Your HR dept would be more receptive to discuss this with your manager. Hopefully, you have her (or his) support on this.
