Monday through Friday 8:30 - 5:30. What is it about your hours that has you unhappy with them?

Re: Your Working Hours?
Our office hours are 8:30 - 5:30. My "working hours" are as many as it takes to get the job done. If your career goals include taking on additional responsbility and promotion in your field, expect to work long hours. As long as your employer is following DOL standards, I'm not sure what options you have other than looking for another job.

Re: Your Working Hours?
well..

Our work week is Sunday to Thursday here in the UAE. and my working hours 7 - 4 which is fine is you take into account one hour lunch break but because i dont really use up that full hour for lunch I would actually like to leave at 3 instead. it should be 8 hours of work afterall atleast in this part of the world. i hope he agrees.

I think thats fair enough to ask . what do you think? And i must say I absolutely disagree with Robin Holtson's comment '...to expect to work long hours' simple because there is never an end to any day's work.

Thanks.

Re: Your Working Hours?
Our official workweek is Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM with a one-hour lunch break; however, I typically come in at 7:30 AM and often remain until 5:30 - 6:30 PM. As Robin noted above, I expect, and am expected, to put in the time needed to get the job done.

Re: Your Working Hours?
Salwa, while it may be fair to ask to leave early, it may not be possible, depending on your position and how the office runs. At my current job, I might be able to swing that because I am not responsible for answering the phones or being reachable by clients. However, at my last job, I had to be available when the office was open, which was 8:30 to 5:30. I could have my hour for lunch, but if I didn't take that hour, there was no way I was leaving early. My job was necessary up until the office closed.

Re: Your Working Hours?
ok..i'd still email him asking approval to leave early. email will give him some time to him over it.

i do understand we need to be there atleast until the boss is around in the office but considering my job i would want to leave early atleast by 30 minutes i.e from 4 pm down to 3.30. wont do any harm, its much quieter in our gas processing plant office.

Thanks all.

Re: Your Working Hours?
You might want to check your policy manuel -- there may be something in it about flexible time. If not, find some positive company-benefiting aspects of you leaving early. If it benefits the boss/company in any way, it will make him/her more agreeable to consider the possibility.

My hours are 8:00 - 5:00 M - Th, 8:00 - 1:00 Fridays. I would love to do 4 10s instead, have discussed it with my back-up OA and have considered putting it in as a request to my boss. My sticky point is that, even as head Admin Support, I man the front desk, which must be attended during open hours.

Things are loosening up in the office world more and more, so plan your strategy and go for it. If the answer is "no" you're no worse off than you are now, right?
