EA and VP - HELP!
I am an EA who recently started a new job and work directly for a Senior VP of HR. This person has asked me to find a book for him to read on how to work effectively with your EA. He has admitted to me he has no clue. I am the sixth EA in this position in a short period of time. I would like this new relationship to last.

Many thanks.

Here is a link that can get your supervisor started How to Work More Effectively with an Administrative Assistant

On this page there are other links (at the bottom) that he or she may click on to learn about how to effectively communicate, delegate, and most importantly appreciate you.

Dewoun,

This is a great opportunity for you to develop an EA/Boss training!

If you need some help, I would be happy to offer some ideas or do a conference call with you and your boss.

The fact that he's asking is a terrific first step!

I doubt if he will do a conference call but any suggestions you have for me to work with him and TRAIN HIM would be greatly appreciated.

Hi mgariffe - Just wanted to recommend a few more resources found here on OfficeArrow. Feel free to print these out and give them to your boss!

Be a Better Boss!

The Relationship Between Boss and Assistant

Hope these help a little!

Re: EA and VP - HELP!
While I can't recommend a specific book, there are several books that can be found by searching a library catalog or business book website. When I started as an assistant to a Mayor, Assistant City Manager, and HR Director, it was clear that they saw me as nothing more than a Girl Friday who would do anything she was told. While my first couple years were rough, I looked for books on how I could show myself as trustworthy, dependable, and capable.

It has taken 7 years to build the level of respect I have now, but the hard work was worth it. At least one of them views me as a partner in the work; the other two may have antiquated views of my role and responsibilities, but they also know that I am not a doormat.

One book that was helpful was The New Office Professional's Handbook by Houghton Mifflen Publishers. Provides some tips . . . Good luck.

If you need someone to chat with, I am available.
