Great suggestions, Libby! Preparing is the key to getting educational approval considering budgets are tight. You may have to negotiate a bit, as Libby mentions, but it's worth it.

I might also suggest reviewing the conference sessions with your boss to discuss what sessions/topics would be mutually beneficial. This really worked for me when I proposed attending my first Administrative Professionals Conference. I used all Libby's steps and then sat down and had my boss circle those sessions he wanted me to attend. Then, when I returned from the conference, I reported to him on those sessions, as well as presenting to the other admins on some of the content. Everybody wins.

I'm a firm believer in continuing education for assistants and there are many wonderful opportunities out there - but they do cost money and a savvy admin will research, prepare and present a detailed proposal for how attending the conference will benefit the company.

Finally, when you do go, be fully engaged in the learning experience. Remember, your company is paying for you to be there - don't skip sessions - get the most out of the experience. There's always plenty of time to socialize and shop!
