Re: Happy Admin Day! What are you doing to celebrate??
HI Chrissy,

Thank you! In previous jobs, I was taken out for lunch and given a gift of flowers, a plant, massage certificate or broadway tickets.

Recently, the company that I work for announced that there will be no reimbursement for Administrative Professional's Day, Retirements, Funeral/Illness related purchases in regards to flowers, gifts, etc.

I receive praise and gratitude for my boss so that's all that really matters.

Also, my husband recognizes this day for all the office admin I do at home (budgets, bills, insurance, mortgage, income tax returns, etc).

Have a great day!
ILC

Today, I'm being taken out to lunch by a group of employees from my previous job - how cool is that!

ILC, you've given me a great idea! I support my husband's real estate business, so as soon as I finish this message, I'll be sending him an email!

I decided to surprise the other admins in the office with cards and candy.

ILC - that's awesome! You have an amazing husband. I love it that he recognizes all the Home Admin you do! And Badgergirl, that is so nice of you to recognize the other Admins in your office. That's a great way to build team rapport.

I wasn't even aware it was admin day (I knew it was sometime this week - but hadn't bothered to find out when) BUT, my boss knew. He left a little cake on each of our desks (me and 3 other people in admin team).

I thought it was very nice
(Tasted good too!)

Just because the company doesn't reimburse for it, doesn't mean you shouldn't expect anything from your boss. How hard is it for him to dip into his pocket for a card or take you out to lunch. Most places I've worked (including some very small, poor non-profits where I was the only admin support), employees took up a collection to buy a card and a small gift or to take me to lunch for Admin Prof Day. Honestly, if nothing at all was said or done, I'd be seriously offended.

It's one day a year for employers to acknowledge the work done by their admins. While most bosses do appreciate the work done by their admins, many of them forget to say so, and this is the one day out of the year they can take time to acknowledge what their admins do for them. For me, it's not so much about how much they spend but rather that they take the time to show their appreciation. I'll work forever for someone who appreciates my work rather than someone who pays me well but treats me like dirt.

Hi Jodith,

Actually, I was a bit disappointed, but the last time I wrote that in another women's forum, I was bashed, so I thought I'd watch my wording here. I should have known it wouldn't be necessary, as this forum seems to be more professional (thankfully).

I do agree with what you wrote, and a card would have been very nice, at the very least. With all the cutbacks and layoffs and now having to take unpaid days off, I felt lucky to still have my job.

Hopefully next year will be different, but yes, we all work so hard in our jobs and at times (depending on our boss/company), admins are not always respected or treated well.

I mentioned working at a non-profit company before that was in dire straits and I still received a card and a nice bouquet of flowers.

I'm just grateful to have an amazing boss.

Hope you had a good weekend (and how did you celebrate April 22)?
