Re: Speak Easy: How to be an Effective Public Speaker
Great article, Kathy. I would add a suggestion that has worked for me. Know your audience. I present and use different techniques and tone, and humor depending on whether it's a group of managers, administrative professionals, women or teenagers. As an Executive Assistant I attended conferences and seminars and often the speakers talked down to the group, or the content just didn't relate. It was obvious the speaker had not done his homework on how to effectively communicate with the audience.

When I started my business, I set a goal to always learn about the group I would be presenting to. Since I focus on Administrative Professionals, I have found my background and experience helps me relate well to their challenges. If I present to managers or younger professionals, I make sure I find ways to relate to them.
