One suggestion when developing your emergency plan is to contact your local police department. They are often happy to come out and discuss how to respond in emergencies. This is especially helpful if your business owns the building, since you won't have a landlord to help with this.

Another thing to think about when considering environmental emergencies like hurricanes and earthquakes. Phones may be out for an extended time, so contacting employees may be difficult. Many companies stated after Katrina that they had been counting on using cell phones in case of a widespread emergency. They hadn't considered that even cell phones might be out.

Also, you should have a comprehensive employee list with all contact numbers maintained off site. You will want to update this regularly, destroying the old list to prevent confusion. This way, if your building is destroyed, you have a way to make contact with employees.

These are just a few of the tips I've found while researching emergency procedures for my own employer.
