Hard Copy Word Document
Is there way of exporting a hard copy document to edit without having to retype the document?

A client's Father has typed his biography on a typewriter.

Darn good question, Janet. The only thing I can think of is to scan it to PDF. But I don't think you can edit text of a PDF...I could be wrong. I'll be really interested in seeing what other people come up with for you. There must be a software program that does that.

Re: Hard Copy Word Document
You will want to scan the document using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. Most scanners these days have that option installed. You will need to proofread the text well, since OCR isn't 100% foolproof, and you'll pretty much lose all formatting, but it's faster than retyping everything.

If you can only scan to a pdf, you can usually copy text from a pdf and copy it into Word. It depends on the version of Reader you're using.

Jodith is right with the OCR solution. Scanning to a PDF won't work because you're just scanning an image and wrapping it in a PDF. At the end of the day, it's still just an image. With OCR, it can "read" the document and do a pretty snazzy job of exporting out. I've had experience with a program called ReadIris Pro (I.R.I.S. - OCR software and Document Management solutions). It's cross platform and pretty well established.
