One thing to remember when shredding business documents is to make sure you aren't violating your company's document retention policies. You may need to document what was shredded and when in case those documents are ever subpeona'd in a court case.

What? Your company doensn't have a document retention policy? Guess what? You've just been nominated to create one *laughs*.

I think as a company there are generally procedures as to what gets shredded and what doesn't. Taking this post as concerning personal information, I don't want to have my bank receipts, old statements, or anything that has information someone could put together and use against me to be easy to access. Granted shredding your personnel file isn't a good idea but shredding the letter that comes with your new bank card / credit card is.

I've become a shred-aholic recently. I always figure "better safe than sorry" when it comes to personal stuff. With the amount of junk mail I receive on a daily basis, I feel like I just can't be too careful.

Speaking of junk mail, has anyone tried those services that claim to eliminate your name from junk mail lists? Some are relatively cheap and I think it might be worth it...but I'm curious to know how well it actually works.

I have tried Catalog Choice. It doesn't do any better than either calling or emailing the company and telling them to take you off their list. I don't know about prescreened junk. Too much junk.

Anything I get in the mail (personal stuff) offering loans or cell phones or anything like that, gets shredded (with a nifty cross cut shredder). General "current resident" junk mail just goes into recycling.

Badgergirl, you'd be amazed at the number of small businesses I've worked for that didn't have any kind of document retention policy. It's just scary.

BTW...I love your avatar! I miss Bloom County!
