Re: Grammar Demons Exorcised!
Can't hardly. Drives me up wall!!! Either you can't wait or you can hardly wait. There is no way you can't hardly wait unless you are being stupid and trying to say you can wait. The only writer who can get away with beginning lines and sentences without capitalization is e.e. cummings. Even if you are writing about e.e. cummings, and quoting him, use the quote in the middle of a sentence to avoid beginning without capitalization.
Byrdymush - I am very sorry that you have experienced the awful butchering of language and words by Southerners. Please know not all of us use double negatives. Some of us thoroughly detest the use of them and try to correct it when we can. __________________

Re: Grammar Demons Exorcised!
In regard to . . .
If the woman on the other side of the cubicle wall from me says "in regardS to" one more time, I think I will climb the wall and not be responsible for my actions. Couldn't care less You cannot possible care any less for that item/person. It is not "I could care less" because then it is possible to care less for an item/person. What is the new trend with "You welcome" It is YOU ARE welcome. I cringe and shudder when I hear any of these things. |

Re: Grammar Demons Exorcised!
This article is fantastic. I feel like much less of a grammar nazi freak!
I've been correcting university assignments of my peers (before that at high school), correcting English teachers, and have to put a great deal of restraint into NOT correcting my superiors. One thing I hate is when people use past tense incorrectly. "I writ that" (Should be "I wrote that) "I done that" ("I DID that") Also I get frustrated when people do not use 'I' correctly. EG: My friends and me. Should be: My friends and I. Or the classic... "I would of done it but..." GAH! Even though the repeat offenders of grammar-slaughter are probably not going to change their ways... it's good to know that other people out there care about the abuse of the apostrophe, the comma, and even (heaven forbid) the simple full stop. I'm currently reading a fantastic book called "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" all about grammar, written by an English woman. It's a fantastic book and quite a laugh. I think everyone here would enjoy it!! Now... don't get me started on 'txt type' ........ -K |
