Letter Endings and Salutations
I am having trouble finding the correct closings for some of my business emails. Whe is it correct to use the following: Yours truly, Sincerely, Respectfully, Regards. Or there others that are appropriate for business emails?

Thanks,

Re: Closings to business letters and emails
Hi JMarie,

I think this is just a matter of preference. I think "Sincerely" sounds more personal than "Regards" but it depends on what you're writing and to whom the email is being written. "Respectfully" sounds like the ending to a heated discussion - the last ditch attempt to show that, regardless of what the letter sounded like, you're still respectful. "Yours truly" sounds like the closing to a letter written to a dear old friend.

I don't know if there are hard and fast rules to using each of these. I typically have used "Sincerely," for business purposes in the past. It is very standard and doesn't call undue attention to itself. It's also very safe - no one can over analyze "sincerely."

Ultimately, the ones you listed are fairly interchangeable. Obviously, you never want to say "love" or "warmly" or anything overly gooey, unless you have a personal relationship with the person and you're not talking about business. Anytime business is being discussed, stick to the standard closings.

Again, it's just a matter of preference here. Both are professional, however, in my opinion,"Best wishes" implies that you're congratulating someone or wishing them good luck for the future. I would generally use that in a personal letter to a friend celebrating a birthday or special event.

Re: Letter Endings and Salutations
The email ending is the call to action whether that be they think, digest or take your view on board.

for example

Jenny if you could respond by Friday that would really make a difference.

David Singh, Business Workforce.
Tel: ..... email ,,,,
or

informal but direct....

Someone has to make this work and your response will trigger others to really make this happen,

David S

Words are what make people react and respond, yours sincerely and kind regards is just being nice and proper.....be in the 21st century say what you mean, diplomacy is the method of asking

hope this helps....

Re: Letter Endings and Salutations
I have noticed that many people in my office end letters with "Yours truly." Even our corporate attorneys use "Yours truly" when drafting a letter on behalf of our CEO. I think that it is a little too personal to use at the end of a business letter. I prefer to end a letter with a "Regards," "Respectfully," or "Sincerely."

Thanks,
E-mails are a casual media, and its conventions are scarcely a decade old. In my experience, "Regards" is good enough.

If you want to be very polite, i.e., when asking for info or action, you may use "Kind regards" or "Warmest regards". The others are too formal and are used for letters, not e-mails.

Kind regards,

Re: Letter Endings and Salutations
For standard correspondence in the old days yours sincerely was used if you knew the person's name ie dear mr bloggs and yours faithfully was used when your correspondence was directed to dear sir/madam or whom it may concern. As for the other closings, from my experience it depends how you know the person and who the person is. When asking I tend to use many thanks, for generally emails I agree with the previous - regards

You may end a Business communication with : "Regards" or "Best Regards". This would sound formal and polite.

As far as email correspondence - your signature should include your contact infomation i.e. your telephone number. Is there anythiing worse then having to search for a phone number?
