I personally use a combination of the two services. Outlook for work, and Google for personal information.

I have them synced simply enough also to my Smartphone so I have everything available at anytime.

I don't have a preference and have used both effectively, depending on my position and technical circumstances. Just for information - in Outlook you can control what appointments can be seen publicly by making them 'private'. That way, the appointment shows on your calendar as time not available, but does not show what the appointment is. So the observation "it's all or nothing with Outlook" is not quite correct.

Google has incorporated a "to-do" to the Gmail calendar! Read about the added "Task" feature on Gmail.
