Twitter - Do you "get it"?

I don't get Twitter. I understand social networking sites for the purpose of connected with others in your field or like in college others in your classes, but much more than that I don't get it. Right now my best use for Facebook is to send messages and see pictures of a friend of mine who moved to Gibraltar last year. Otherwise honestly I don't care about the every minute update of my family.
