Paired Comparison Analysis (Excel)

Description:

Use the paired comparison analysis when the details of a project are somewhat vague and you need help prioritizing the pieces.

Start by listing the tasks you are looking to prioritize. Then, assign them a letter. Compare each of them in a column and row. Two by two, assign them a number of importance. You should be able to see a clear prioritization of tasks.

Libby,

I recently found your Paired Comparison Analysis Chart, but found it rather time consuming when doing many rankings. I put together a simple automated spreadsheet to make things easier! Please feel free to place on Office Arrow if you feel it could be useful to others.

Regards,
Richard Manson

Re: Paired Comparison Analysis (Excel)
Thanks for your comments Chrissy, I have an admission to make though, I am not an office professional! I am actually a mechanical engineer, who has to use various office applications in my job. I tend to just make these spreadsheets when I need them, but would be happy to share when I have something usefull to the community here.

Best Regards,
Richard

My apologies there was an error in the original sheet! The corrected version is attached.

This is excellent. I am interested in using this with a group of people to prioritize a number of issues. Is there a way to have each person complete a worksheet and feed all their responses into a summarized group analysis?

I looked at this problem, but eventually we decided to fill in the spreadsheet as a group! We simply held a group meeting, discussed each pairing until we had reached a consensus and then filled in the sheets. This was mainly because the input to the sheet is very subjective, and with a small sample of people from 3 very disparate disciplines each of whom were looking at things from their own groups perspectives it was difficult to summarise automatically and reach a definitive conclusion.

With a larger number of participants, from a broader demographic, it should be possible to collect the data and collectively compare pairs based on ranking of the results for each individuals pair comparisons.

Best Regards,
Richard

Now, suppose that you wanted to assign a weight factor so I could say, "comparing A and B, B is more important by little, a bit or a lot"

How would you do that?
