Re: Simply Put: How to Be a Good Executive Assistant
This is an excellent article. I sent it to my other executive assistant friends. I agree with you 100%! The #1 most important part is confidentiality. My boss uses me as a sounding board a lot of times... where he talks about other employees work habits, personal habits, who is probably going to lose their job, who is going to be promoted, etc. I have access to everyone's personnel file and everyone's pay. This is information that absolutely can not get out, but my boss trusts me, and through his trust others have come to trust me. People like the VP and director of HR, can give me a confidential task to complete and they know they won't hear about it through the grapevine. Life is a lot easier when you have the key to every door.
On a side note, I have no "friends" at work. Work friends expect you to spill the beans... I have made it clear to the other admin that I will not share any information with them. They thought I was being a snob at first but now they realize it is my job. Being an Executive Assistant is not the job to have if your main concern is people liking you. __________________

Excellent article, Chrissy. I've been and Executive Assistant for a few years, and you've really hit the nail on the head in what it takes to be successful as an Executive Admin. The jump from Administrative Assistant to Executive Assistant in some ways isn't that big of a jump, but it's a big jump when it comes to working in a different culture, which it truly is.

Wow! I've recently made the A.A. to E.A. jump in March '08 to be exact, and your article is exactly what I've been looking for! I tend to wonder if I'm doing what a E.A. is supposed to do and from this article it looks like I am! What a confidence booster! Thanks for this great article.
