Totally understand where this article is hitting. I took an out of the box approach after graduating college. I became aware that New Zealand had a severe skills shortage, so I submitted my resume to some companies down there. Ended up landing a full time auditor position with their equivalent to the GAO. After maxing out my credit cards to get down there, I decided I was going to make the best out of situation. I got an excellent ROI in the form of the experience that I gained.
