Starting VA business
Hi, I am new to this group but have been wondering how to get a VA business started? What kind of funding did any of you start with. I have been wanting for a couple of years to start my own VA business but I don't have the capital. I work full time but have an out of work husband who I could employ, he has an accounting degree and has clerical work experience. But because he is out of work and the fact that I have not been in business already, I can't get a business loan. I would need some office equipment, supplies and a new computer. I just don't know where to start. Do I just put an add in the paper and do things like that at first?

Any help or ideas you can give would be greatly appreciated. Crystal

Re: Starting VA business
Great question Crystal! And welcome to the group. I’m happy to have you here and to support you in getting your business off the ground.

I addressed this very question in a recent blog post, which you can check out at The Top 3 Ways to Get Started in Virtual Assistance | Executive Assistant To Virtual Assistant!.

Regarding equipment, you'll need a quality computer (always buy the best you can afford), a dedicated telephone line, fax number (which you can get free at eFax - Email Fax Services) and powerful DSL/Broadband connection. To market yourself you can start with a simple blog style website such as TypePad (http://tinyurl.com/2jeeku) which can run less than $10 per month. You can find a list of other resources I recommend at
Resources | Executive Assistant To Virtual Assistant!.

To start getting your feet wet and working with your first clients, check out telecommuting opportunities on craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums and a myriad of opportunities for Virtual Assistance at Elance | Connect with Qualified Professionals. Your husband could definitely take advantage of opportunities listed there appropriate to his skill set.

Use any revenue you earn to reinvest in your business and plan to participate in a comprehensive training program, such as the one offered by AssistU (AssistU: Virtual Assistance information and referrals, and Virtual Assistants training.). You’ll want to learn how to run your business, identify and attract your ideal clients and how to make strategic decisions. Keep in mind you are working to build a solid, profitable, sustainable business for the long-term. The more time, energy and resources you invest in your business, the more you’ll get out of it.

Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions.

Best regards,

Sydni
