Help!
Hi. I am returning to full time work after being out on disability for an anxiety disorder. One of the problems I always came up against in past jobs (there's alot of them) was not being fast enough. I am a good worker, but not the best multitasker.

My question is how does one get and keep a job in this world of the "fast-paced," "multitasking" work environment?

Re: Help!
Interesting question...the whole "multi-tasking" thing is questionable. It's not always wise to divide your attention between tasks. It's more important and more efficient to do things right rather than fast. Ultimately, I think employers will see that. Don't force yourself to work at a faster pace just because you think you "have" to. I would explain your work style to your boss - let him or her know that you're a focused individual, who works best when doing one thing at a time. Let them know that you will work to improve your pace by ensuring there are few distractions (for example, don't have music on at your workstation as it might look like you're zoning out and not concentrating).

In my opinion, multi-tasking is really only a good idea if you're doing mindless activities. I blow dry my hair in the morning while reading celebrity trash blogs. That's the appropriate kind of multi-tasking. Real work should be focused on.

Hope that helps! Good luck in the new position.

Re: Help!
Get a job that does not require multitasking. If you don't your job/lost cycle will only continue.

Thank you Chrissy. Your response encourages me to accept myself as I am; and to remember this as I do my job search.

Re: Help!
Do not worry, I have Osteo-Arthritis and have been active in my job as an environmental director for a biofuels company. never let any form of disability get the better of you, as after 12 years of pain and mobility problems, I have found the best way to cope with anything.
