Re: Pantyhose or no?
As another member mentioned, hose or no-hose really depends on your genetics and the condition of your legs. I think some of the issue could be solved by treating yourself to a nice pair of pantyhose, not the drugstore variety. I know, I know... they are more expensive and when you catch them on something it feels like you're throwing money away and isn't it so much easier to go bare?! Yes, it is, but hose are really the finishing touch on most office attire. Wearing hose also helps keep that line between questionable and acceptable. I'm 24 and sometimes hose can feel "old," but I found these awesome ones that are nude with a slightly darker backseam down the back! Treat yourself and get a nice pair from a department store, and pay a little extra for that treatment wash that keeps them from running. Ask for help to match your right color, and don't go much darker than natural. Like foundation, they should even out your legs but not mask them.

Re: Pantyhose or no?
I'm in my forties. I always wear pantyhose to interviews. I match the color to my outfit, although I wear very light (No Nonsense) nude pantyhose in the summer months.
I do not wear pantyhose to work in the summer months on days I don't have a board or committee meeting. I dress very conservatively on all days that I have meetings with external people, especially board members, usually a skirt or pant suit. I keep my jacket on during the meeting unless the heat is on too high. Trouser socks are more comfortable than knee highs and look less outdated if they match pants well. |

Re: Pantyhose or no?
Absolutely Dead Wrong..Career.com just listed the top 20 things hiring managers site as poor etiquette..Open shoes and bare legs are both on there..you not wearing hose screams the opposite, that your not serious, your unprofessional, not that your old fashioned, that's absurd. If your a woman interviewing for any higher end job, a skirt suit, hose and closed shoes is a MUST..I don't know ANYONE who wouldn't hire someone for wearing hose, I know plenty of people who don't

Re: Pantyhose or no?
I have to agree with simd. If I'm interviewing a woman and she comes in with bare legs, she'll get a point knocked off. Although, here in the far Pacific NW, I've found people tend to dress much more casually for an interview, which really threw me when I first moved here. I actually asked a recruiter about it, thinking I was overdressing. She told me that, no, at the level I was interviewing, I was dressed appropriately, and that she'd never send one of the more casually dressed to the type of executive assistant interviews I was going on.
And, yes, I'm a baby boomer. At 47, I was in the last year of the baby boom. I was raised that you never, ever underdress for an interview. Even if you're applying for a fry cook position, you wear a nice suit, understated jewelry, closed toe shoes and hose. I just can't bring myself to do anything else for an interview. As for panty hose...I don't wear those any more. Stockings are my thing. I always hated panty hose, and they aren't really conducive to female health, if you catch my drift. I buy the stockings that stay up by themselves using a rubberized backing around the top. I'm a hefty woman, and I found them even for my size, and I just love them. |
