Swearing in the Workplace
There has been a lot of discussion lately about the use of foul language being used around the workplace. ABC News just came out with an article about the pros and cons, as well as individual executives thoughts on the subject. I personally believe that as long as it is used sparingly, an expletive here and there can help lighten up the mood of an office, as seen in this Bud Light commercial. What are your thoughts on the subject?

Re: Swearing in the Workplace
I agree. Traditionally, it is seen as very unprofessional. But I believe that if it is used sparingly and among co-workers that you work with and have a comfortable relationship with than it would be ok. Of course, it is never appropriate in a meeting or at an event- unless the CEO or other Executive does, but even then-I wouldn't!

Re: Swearing in the Workplace
I think swearing should be very restricted in the workplace. I consider myself pretty easy going, but some of the words and topics i hear from a co-worker in my office make me very uncomfortable (expletive words, as well as very personal details). Especially as the "newbie" I find that I need to hold myself to a high standard - regardless of what others are doing.

Re: Swearing in the Workplace
I think bluemoon makes a point for everyone - though WE might think it's fine, it's super important to keep in mind that others might not. I used to work with someone who had a very raunchy sense of humor and personally, I'm an easy going gal, but I got completely annoyed by it. Everyone has their limits and we have to remember that we're not all the same. That said, I've dropped a few words myself that I probably shouldn't have

Re: Swearing in the Workplace
It may be if you give an inch some people will take a mile. I think if you say no swearing in the office then a few words will happen, but not as frequently. I have worked in offices where anything goes in the language department and it has been hard to take. I linked to a few articles on this on my blog. Each article gave an opposing view so it was interesting to read.

Re: Swearing in the Workplace
Ok, let me ask all of you out there what you think of this. What about when you hear someone say "What the "F"? Do you still find yourself feeling like they actually said the "word"? I do. I mean, it's not as bad, but even knowing what they mean is sometimes offensive (and sometimes funny depending on the situation). Here's the thing that I've noticed throughout various industries (and the industry DOES matter): If it becomes acceptable for one person to swear 'once in a while', you'll soon find that most will follow, and with increased volume. Sometimes you can do something about it, and other times you can't (that's the part that's so frustrating!) I've even had to take new employees out to lunch to [i]discuss[i] the issue of swearing in the office!! But hey, whatever it takes; right? And might I add that not using Terms of Endearment is as equally important. I QUICKLY, but nicely, remind a male associate that my name is not "Honey" or "Sweetheart". Let's keep it clean and professional please.

Re: Swearing in the Workplace
Having worked in places ranging from an auto repair garage to the Federal Reserve Bank (where I got talked to for laughing out loud) -- yeah, it depends! Used sparingly, in casual situations, and if you're sure NO ONE minds, it's probably OK.
One friend of mine was fine with cursing UNLESS you used the Lord's name. Then she would read you the riot act. As far as 'What The F', that reminds me of what my mother would say when she was pushed to the edge: "H E double hockey sticks!" Or, using the Lord's name, "J.C. on a crutch!" (I still have no idea what that means.) We just couldn't take her anger very seriously when she said those things. |

Re: Swearing in the Workplace
I went from working in a theatre to working for a management company for retirement and assisted living communities. At the theatre pretty much anything was fine as long as there were no children around. Now in order to laugh at a normal speaking level and to say, "What the heck?" I have to go into a friend's office and close the door. We have a strong no cussing policy, but my friend claims her office with the door shut is available if swearing is needed.

Re: Swearing in the Workplace
I've heard everyone in my office swear... including the COO, my boss! But it is so funny to see them right as the word is about to come out they look around and duck their head a little and whisper the word... I work with a lot of old school executives who aren't used to the idea that they can cuss and not get scolded... especially if there is a "lady" in the room... Puleeze... I'm ten times worse than they are! (although I try to keep it down while I'm at work)
