Help with a boss who does not want an Executive Assist.
Hi,
I presently employed at a bank in Boston, MA. I am an executive assistant. The job I have always wanted. However, it has turned into a nightmare. I started here on Nov. 2007. My boss does not want an executive assistant. When I was interviewed he said that there was no job description, that should have been my first clue. When I accepted the job, with some misgivings, I asked him if I was to be given access to his calendar and inbox. His response was that he did not want to be micromanaged. I shorta bite my tongue. He does not want my help on anything. Things have only gotten worst. I am now regulated to getting him lunch, getting him to sign things and on occasion answer his phone. I also do photocopying and faxing for someone else. I have tried to get him to do his expenses for the last three weeks to no avail. He saids that he has no time for me, which is typical. I am lost. Totally lost. I don't know what to do, maybe I should just hang out until I complete my Bachelors. I will be finished in December. I do homework at work. I just get so depressed because I know that I am a good EA and I am being wasted. Does anyone have any advice for me? |

I would either attempt to talk with him about focusing your job a little more (I doubt anything will happen there). Or find another job where you will be wanted and appreciated. If you feel miserable at your job it isn't work staying (even if you get paid to do homework). But I wouldn't quit before you have another job offer!

Probably time to move on. But definitely don't quit until you have something else. There is always somebody who doesn't mind this type of job, but if it is not your cup of tea, look for something more challenging. On the bright side, your experience there will look good on your resume. You don't have to tell them you weren't utilized to your full potential. But if they ask you why you are leaving your job you could honestly say it wasn't challenging enough.

Re: Help with a boss who does not want an Executive Assist.
I would have to agree with the previous comments; it may be time to move on. Although you are graduating in December, being unhappy until then is only going to make the next 6 months feel like eternity. It is best to move on now, and get your foot in the door somewhere that you can truely be happy and can build a career at. If you are happy at the bank, just not working for your boss, could you speak with HR about other opportunities? Maybe there are even other EA positions available.

Hi Everyone,
I just want to say thanks for giving me feedback. You all have validated what I should do. I thought maybe I was going crazy. I am planning on starting to look for a new job in September. Again, thank you all again. Pattie |

I was in this same situation! I actually told my boss my brain was wasting away... now I'm SUPER busy and loving it! The relationship between and executive assistant and the executive is a very close one. You need to be able to tell him/her exactly what you need.
