A day for distractions
I once went to this seminar for admins. and one of the topics we discussed was distractions.
At the time, I didn't think it related to me because I didn't think I was distracted by that many people. But now, a few months later I realize that I am distracted! If someone walks by my desk, sends me an email, the phone rings, I even distract myself with thoughts of other things i have to do either at work or when i leave work. How does everyone else deal with these distractions? How do you get back on track in an efficient manner? I'd love to read your responses! |

Re: A day for distractions
I've recently written an article on how to improve you're concentration and focus.
I was feeling especially distracted one day and writing the article and applying the lessons as I learned them helped tremendously. The article hasn't been published yet but one thing I can tell you is to try to prioritize what you have in front of you in order alleviate any stress that may be swimming around in your head. These looming thoughts often cause distractions in our own minds. In order to keep things not work related off of your mind, make a deal with yourself to take care of those things later. Write yourself a note to solidify your agreement and let that distraction disappear from your mind. |

Re: A day for distractions
I tend to be constantly Multi-tasking all day long. Some of these things can be called distractions, and some of them I let become distractions.
While the phone is ringing, or the voicemail is giving me it's outgoing message, I might be reading some RSS feeds, or posts here on OfficeArrow. In other instances, I'm answering an email or preparing a proposal for a client. Sometimes I'm standing by my desk looking out my window thinking what is going to be dinner tonight when I get off work. Some of these things are distractions, and others are just tasks that I do on the spot. If I am not completing projects and things I need to get done, then I'll try to buckle down and focus more, but in general. the distractions are what keeps my mind fresh and the day moving.
