I live in Las Vegas...
Ok, I have been out of work (in the administrative field) for almost 6months now. I have not been able to find work and I am going crazy sitting home everyday. I search and apply for jobs but nothing. I am a dedicated and ambitious person who is willng to learn, develop and excel while giving my best to an employer. I need to know if any employer is looking for somepne like myself and if there is hope. If anyone responds I can send my resume to you. Any words of advice or encouragement would be appreciated. This is a scary and depressing time right now. Thank you so much and have a great day!

Hi pizzaqueen926,
First of all, keep your head up! I've been in your shoes and it is easy to get down on yourself, especially when you have a lot of time on your hands. It's a tough market right now, so don't take it personally. One recommendation I have is to get on a schedule that includes time for job searching, networking and a hobby. You still need to make time for the things you enjoy. Even if you just take 15 mins to walk around the block. Also, reach out to your professional network. Go to lunch or grab coffee with them. This will allow you to be top of mind for them if they hear of an opening. Libby wrote an article titled "How to Make the Most of a Layoff". You may not have been laid off but it might still be a great time to consider her recommendations. I wish you the best of luck in your job search! Re: I live in Las Vegas...
Been there, done that! I know how you feel having lived through several layoffs. The first one always seems worst -- you think you will NEVER return to work no one loves you and no one else will ever think you are good enough to hire you.
Okay, now that all the negativity is out, breathe in the positive energy! Nicole has some great advice. We also wrote an article coming out tomorrow called "Tips for the recently laid off". Read it and live it! Always remember, this is a temporary situation. If you are truly having a hard time finding something in Vegas, you may need to broaden your search beyond the state lines. When one door closes one or many more open up, you just have watch for them. Network, network, network and the doors will open faster. Please keep us posted on your progress or let us know if you have any other questions. |

Re: I live in Las Vegas...
PQ,
Here's an idea. Get in touch with the Las Vegas IAAP chapter. Call Jasmine Freeman at Office Dynamics. The number is 800-STAR-139. She is the EA there and is very involved in the IAAP chapter in LV. Tell her I gave you her name (I am the West Coast trainer for the STAR program at Office Dynamics as well as doing my own training programs). That might be a good resource for you. Right now, considering the economy, you may have to consider looking outside your regular job ideal. Check out the University and the Hospitals - those are two areas that will continue to hire (although limited) in this crisis. I would also recommend that you "hit the pavement." Job searchers who actually walk in to companies with resume in hand are more likely to land a job than those that send resumes on line. And finally, remember you are an AP!!! That sets you up for success. Stay positive and good things will happen. Use your time right now to seize opportunities rather than focus on how tough it is. Good luck. __________________

But still, you'll be earning money instead of sitting around doing nothing. Another suggestion is starting a business of your own, assisting small businesses with their admin needs. You may only work a couple days a week to assist a small company with bookkeeping, mailers, billing, etc., but if you do that for a few companies, you can be busy most of the time. Also, you can work online doing typing, etc., or start an internet business. Since you're "dedicated, ambitious, and willing to learn" you can take online training and learn it.
