Why do you want to leave your current employer?
What are some key responses to the question of why you want to leave the company you're with currently? I am looking to leave because of the travel involved and the time away from home. I don't feel like that is a good answer however. Any suggestions?

Hi there! Well, I don't think that your honest reason for wanting to leave is necessarily a BAD thing. After all, in any new position, you want to make sure that you're not traveling as much - so it makes sense to be up front regarding your feelings about time away from home. Of course, it's all about how you phrase it. You can also "pad" it by adding that the position isn't allowing enough growth opportunity or that you've reached a ceiling there. However, I certainly do encourage honesty in this case. Your reason isn't UNreasonable. It's fair and you definitely want to be certain that you don't end up in a situation where you'll be traveling as much - or even more! - than you are currently. If you aren't honest, it could happen. Good luck!

I wouldn't say that wanting to spend more time at home was a bad thing either. Particularly not if you have children, as this can even be seen in your favour, as it shows a healthy work/life balance. Also, if you have a particularly long commute in your current role, you might feel drained by the time you get to work/get home. This has been shown to have an adverse effect on people's work, so its no bad thing to suggest you want to perform to the best of your abilities and feel confident that a shorter commute would enable you to give even more to your new role.

When I was interviewed for my current role, the interviewer asked why I left a job that required me to work from home, and I explained that working on my own was getting me down, and I really missed working in an office environment. As soon as I said it, my interviewer smiled and said "well we are looking for someone who's happy to work as part of a team". Without having to explain my answer, the interviewer had picked up on my sincerity, so I would definitely say stick with the truth, as your body language will tell them just as much, if not more.

Honesty is the best policy. Lives change and travel 50% of the time might have been okay 3 years ago but now it's not.

Have you talked to your current employer about reducing your travel time?

I am currently on workers comp for a hand injury I acquired at work. Per the therapist, I've been put on work restrictions. Needless to say, the work keeps on coming and my boss isn't doing anything about it. In fact, she has asked me numerous times if I need anything to do. Now, she avoids me totally, (she doesn't want to deal with my situation) and HR doesn't seem to care. I set up a meeting with her, her boss, myself and HR to discuss my workload and my restrictions. In the meantime, I've been pushing back with taking on more work until this discussion happens. The office is very insensitive to my situation and I'm stuck in the middle. I've been seriously thinking about looking for another job because I have zero respect for these people.

I am tired of them taking away pay because of a mistake that was corrected on my time card and also they are constantly wanting to know about my personal life and medical history.

It is illegal for an employer to ask about an employee's medical history. Federal law, HIPAA, is very specific about this. As far as your personal life is concerned, you are under no obligation to disclose or discuss anything.

You need to contact your state's Dept of Labor. If you are on Workers Comp, you are protected under state law.
