Re: any tips for a secretary
What helps me is to have an expectation conversation with the people I will support. I need to know what their expectations are and they need to know what my experience is and how I can help them.
I write everything down. I found a great website with free calendars and I print out what they call a monthly calendar but highlight the days and use it for my to do list. Take 10 minutes at the end of the day to prepare for the next day. Take 10 minutes at the beginning of each day to prepare for the day. Those 20 minutes are crucial to my work day going smoothly. Ask for clarification if something does not make sense. If you are asked to do a project and you are not clear on the direction, asking questions is better than making mistakes. Good luck! |

Learn the business. Listen and observe and be aware. The more you know about the business overall, not just about your particular tasks, the more valuable you will be.
Start a good filing and organizing system early on. And I agree with LJ....meet regularly with your boss. If there was a job description for the position, review it with him or her and discuss areas you are not clear about. Put regular meetings on the calendar. Even if this is a small company, that's a must. It will help you build a relationship and learn your boss's management style so you can excel at your job. Good luck!! __________________

Re: any tips for a secretary
Congrats on your new role!
Always have a notebook and pen with you. You never know when your boss is going to go into a lengthy discussion full of details about something he needs you to work on. Always be courteous, even when the boss/coworkers/customers are not. You're going to be great! Keep a positive attitude and you'll go far. |
