Newbie here: 1st discussion re: required to take unpaid days off
Hello everyone!

I just signed on with Office Arrow. I'm an EA in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Our office was just informed that we will be taking 10 days unpaid as a temporary measure due to the decline in our business.

Has anyeone else experienced a reduction in hours (unpaid).

Hi ILC and welcome! I haven't experienced such a thing myself but I've heard of it. And, to be honest, I think it's a good measure for a company to take if they're having a rough time. It's better than laying people off, that's for sure. It puts everyone in the same boat and hey, you get some added days off! Use them productively and think of the alternative. Could be worse given all that is going on in the economy. Hope to see you around OA more!

I agree with Chrissy. I have a friend who's company recently closed thier doors. Prior to the closing, they went to a 4-day work week, and laid off 50% of their work force. If you feel as though the company is vulnerable to closing, use the time off to update your resume, network and meet with a couple recruiters.

Hi Chrissy and Robin,

Thank you for your feedback. I was just hoping to read other's experiences.

I agree that this temporary set back is a very small, compared to being laid off.

The time off is of no concern to me, as I have already thought about things I could do.

Have a great day,
ilc

One thing to think about if you are being given reduced hours or furlough time due to the recession. Check with your unemployment office to see if you qualify for benefits. Some states do offer benefits during these times, so check to see if you qualify.

Our staff is required to take 5 days furlough, with a 5-10% cut in pay. Still it beats not having a job at all. I'm using my 5 days to do a lot of things around the house that I've been putting off.

Hi Jodith,

Our legal department has already looked into the E.I. qualifications and it won't work, however, thank you for bringing that up.

Since my post, we now have to take 15 unpaid days off.
