40 Questions to Consider Before Going Back to School
Going back to school is not an easy decision. For many people it means a total overhaul of lifestyle. Even if you're happy in your current position, many people yearn to complete their education. They also perceive education as a means to a better life for themselves and their family. No matter what your excuse is, there are tons of variables to consider. If you're currently mulling over the idea of continuing your education, consider these questions before making your final decision:
- Why do I want to go back to school?
- What do I want to do?
- What are my strengths?
- What are my weaknesses?
- Do I want to make more money?
- Do I want to work in a different field?
- How long am I willing to commit to attaining a degree or certificate?
- Do I have the drive to complete my education?
- What area of study will get me to where I want to be?
- Can I afford it?
- How long will it take to complete my goal?
- How will tuition be paid?
- Am I eligible for financial aid?
- Are scholarships available?
- Can my family handle it?
- How will the household bills get paid?
- Do I need to cut back my current work hours?
- Can I accomplish my goals by going to school part-time?
- Does my company offer tuition reimbursement?
- How will my boss react?
- Should I take classes online?
- What school should I go to?
- Is there a school in a convenient location that will fit my needs?
- Is this the right time to go back to school?
- Should I wait any longer?
- Should I choose a university, community college or training program?
- What courses am I interested in taking?
- Do I have past college course credit that may transfer to a new school?
- Do I have the knowledge to test out of certain classes?
- Can I set enough time aside to study?
- Can I set enough time aside for my family?
- Will I have the support I need?
- Is my current job one that can be done on a part-time basis?
- Will my boss consider allowing me the time off?
- Can my job get done with fewer hours?
- Is there opportunity to advance within my current company with this education?
- Will I still have health insurance?
- Am I absolutely ready for this commitment?
- Will this provide a brighter future for my family?
- Will this make me happy?
You may be struggling with your current situation and looking at going back to school as the opportunity to break out of a rut. You're not alone; many working adults return to school each year. It's important to remember that it's never too late to go back, but circumstances can change frequently. You must weigh your situation against your ability and discuss it with your family to make a sound decision.
