New Year, New You: Share and Win
With every New Year comes an opportunity to start over and focus on the things that are really important to you. Last January here at OfficeArrow, we asked our members to reflect on the year and share their resolutions. We’d like to do the same thing this time around because resolutions are universal and, after all, studies show that the best way to achieve success is to set a goal.
Here’s what we want you to do: Think of what you’d like to accomplish this year and make a resolution to do so! It doesn’t have to be something you accomplish immediately. All goals worth having will take time, effort, and certainly dedication. This contest is for you to share those resolutions, whether personal or professional (or both!), and connect with the rest of the OA community so that those goals might be achieved. We’ll even reward you for your time.
Simply click the blue “Discuss” button above this article to submit an entry. One lucky OA member will receive:
- A $100 Visa gift card to help you get started on your goal
As with all OA contests, participating is super easy and the reward is great. We love to hear back from our members, so jump right in!
The contest begins today, Tuesday, January 5, 2010 and ends at midnight EST on Sunday, January 31st. The winner will be announced on Monday, February 1st, so be sure to look for your name.

My primary New Year Resolution for 2010 is to further develop a home-based business I began in the fall of 2009. It's taken a while to get organized and to find the best marketing approach to suite my personality. Now that I have a better understanding of how to approach others, I look forward to a successful year. Another goal I have is personal development of presentation skills. Therefore involvement with Toastmasters International is at the top of my "to-do" list. It's going to be a great year! D. Bragg

My goals are to build my business plan writing company to 100 clients every month by the end of the year and to reduce the amount of dairy products I consume.

My first goal is to find a new job! Second goal is to exercise more; now that I'm unemployed, I find myself not working out as much as I used to. Third goal is to listen to some motivational CDs, this to help with the exercise goal and to just generally keep me upbeat about my current situation. Fourth goal is to upgrade my MS Office skills. I've already got one class (Excel 2007) accomplished, and am currently working on others. This I want to finish by next month or March the latest. Fifth goal is to finish the writing course I'm taking. It's not business writing but a fiction-writing course. That will take most of the year, but I'm hoping to finish it sooner rather than later. Hmm...that motivational CD would work here, too. :-) Nancy

My new years resolution is to treat myself with the respect and dignity my humanity deserves. I know that sounds all zen and stuff, but what I really mean is I am no longer willing to let a bag of chips and chocolate (in excess) get me through my afternoon at work! I deserve more than that! So I'm drinking more water, planning my meals and sticking to my plan. So far day 5 is going ok - please tell me once this is a habit I won't go crazy between 1 - 4pm at my desk! I also have been doing mind spa treatments at lunch - 20 min mental vacation to music and soothing sounds with guided meditation. It's been good but again hoping the struggle part passes as I develop the habit. End goal: To lose 60lbs, feel great, have energy and enjoy my work and life even more. (Also be a nicer person to be around). Cicilia

My goals are a mixture of personal and business. The primary goal is to exercise daily (even if that means walking psycho puppy)and get in shape to ride a 50-mile bicycle ride through the Grand Valley. I did a 30-mile canyon ride last year and will do it again - only faster! I also will be adding to my skill set as a virtual assistant with shopping cart skills, taking my mastermind group to a new level with a paid option for those who would like to be introduced to new skills, continue to de-materialize my house and life so it is much simpler and cleaner. I also want to pursue the Microsoft certifications and more. The best goal - spend more time with family, kids, and grandkids. w00t! Looking forward to a great year! Kyle

Good luck with the CPS and CAP exams. I got my CPS back in 1987 (hard to believe it was that long ago!) and my CAP in 2005, so I will be recertifying this year. It's an interesting exam, not sure it's done a lot for me but certainly leads to some interesting conversations at job interviews.

My Professional goals are to obtain a new job this year doing what I love (executive administration) and to take a course in Microsoft Access. My Personal goals are to get back into practicing yoga (which does wonders for my stress), reduce our household debts and do more quality family activities together.

My professional goal is to find new employment that better uses the skills and experience I have. Presently I am under employed and underutilized and it's time to move past the comfort zone Personal goal is to run two half marathons, one in the spring and one in the fall. I plan to finish the spring run in less than 2 hours, the fall one in under 2 hrs 15 minutes. The fall run has over 6000 participants, so it is much slower. My financial goal is to actually create an emergency fund by putting away 10 percent of our net income every paycheque.

My New Year resolution was to find a job, any job. After being unemployed for 14 months, I finally found a job. It is only part-time, and only for 3 months. but nonetheless, it is a job. Being a non-traditional full-time student, majoring in International Business, I am also trying to see my way through to work as an ESL teacher in China. It has always been my dream to go home to my heritage, but something has always blocked it. This year, I am earnest to make that succeed. It will mean living my husband and grandchildren for 3 months, but that want me to go because they know I have always wanted to. I believe in keep on reaching for your dream(s); don't be discouraged. If you desire it, it will come. 2010 will be a much better year for us. There are only good things we can accomplish now.

I usually do not do resolutions. However, being out of work for almost 3 years and disabled I decided to do something different this year. My resolution is to declutter my house and make my office accessible. I've already started and with some hard work and help from friends I am making progress.

My resolutions are both professional and personal. I had a baby a year ago and my professional goal is to continue to provide for my family so that my husband can stay home with our youngest daughter. It's also personal in that I want to get a good handle on our savings account so that I can finish home projects and take my family on a great vacation this year.

My professional goal is to conquer one of my fears and that is speaking in front of a group of people. I always know what I want to say, but once I get in front of the group, I tend to forget my thoughts and have a hard time speaking. I have already started to take action; I have coordinated an Enterprise Resource group at work which engages all of the Administrative Professionals from each department. I hold monthly meetings and present to the group on changes that are occuring in my department as well as presenting new projects that we are rolling out to the entire company. I'm hoping that this will help me become more comfortable when speaking to any group.

This year I resolve to try to be the person I like people to think I am.
