It's Employee Appreciation Day: Pat Yourself (and Others) on the Back
Today is a fabulous reminder that appreciation is sorely lacking in the workplace. Yes, it's "Employee Appreciation Day" and, let's be honest: If they have to make a special "day" for it, then it probably isn't happening as often as it should. It's to be expected, I suppose. We're all busy. We get consumed in our daily tasks and forget that a few small words of gratitude go a long way. Today is an opportunity to correct that - and a reminder to make appreciation a part of our daily working lives all year long.
I know that personally, I'm very motivated by praise. In fact, I made a conscious effort to tell my boss this when we first started working together. I'm a natural-born teacher's pet: Tell me I'm your favorite student, and I'll shine for weeks. Of course, even if you know someone is very receptive to appreciation, it's still hard to remember to do it. Maybe you think about it, but the words rarely make it to your lips. My boss thinks I'm great, and he tells me that occasionally. But, a little more would never hurt. And this is true for anyone. Even if you think you show your appreciation for others regularly, it never hurts to tell them again. And again. And again.
Let's not forget the power of showing ourselves appreciation, as well. Do you ever stop and give yourself a nice, hearty pat on the back? Do you consciously recognize all that you've accomplished? Take some time to do so today. Remember, you don't have to depend on others to lift you up. Acknowledging your own overall "awesomeness" is totally OK! And, it's incredibly healthy and motivating. Give it a try, and you'll see how powerful it can be.
