10 Must-Have Brainstorming Tools

Sometimes brainstorming isn't as simple as just dumping tons of ideas onto a piece of paper. Once you have the ideas, it helps to be able to track them and their next actions. While there are many techniques to get the juices flowing, I've compiled a list of the top 10 must have brainstorming tools:

ThinkGraph

ThinkGraph is just one of many types of software you can use to organize ideas and track ideas through to completion. It uses a combination of 2D drawings and Concept Maps that allow you to easily illustrate your thoughts. It's basically like a diagram you might draw out yourself, but it's is done on your computer. The best part about it is it's free. (For more information on this concept, check out our article: How to Map a Project)

Drill Down Worksheet

Our Drill Down worksheet is probably one of the easiest tools to use. It's simply a diagram that you fill out with your own ideas and each next action for those ideas. It's all plotted out for you already, but depending on how big your project is you may need to add or delete a few boxes. It's simple and free and right here on OfficeArrow.

Visio

Microsoft's Visio software is probably the most popular brainstorming tool around. It's extremely helpful in creating diagrams and consolidating a ton of complex information. But, at such a high price ($259.95 for a standard edition and $559.95 for their professional edition) I wonder if it's worth it. It's a great tool, but I would recommend trying out a few free options before you spend a lot of cash.

bubbl.us

This incredibly user-friendly web application allows you to dump your brain into mind maps and other organizational charts. It's super simple to create a bubble with your subject or project name and then just fill in the ideas around it, all from your web browser. And, it's free!

InnovationTools

Sometimes the ideas just don't flow as you'd like them to. Even in a group, getting participants to project their thoughts isn't always easy. InnovationTools isn't software or a web-based program that will generate ideas for you; it's simply a website with useful information to unlock your brain.

MindMapper

This software is similar to Visio or ThinkGraph but I find that it's easier to use. Their graphics are a little more pleasing to the eye and the package is much cheaper than Visio. For $179.95 you get all the tools you need plus the ability to brainstorm from your Palm Pilot.

The New Mind Map

Sometimes having the right software isn't enough to effectively generate and follow ideas. Michael J. Gelp's book entitled "The New Mind Map" is an oldie but goody. He discusses techniques to make your own mind maps and tools to get the most from your brainstorming. It's another cheap way to go at $10.

XMind

This software is great for project management. It utilizes Web 2.0 concepts and infuses them with team brainstorming and personal mind mapping. They even added a Gantt Chart in their latest version for junior and senior project managers. Their basic service is free and you can convert your mind maps into PDF or PowerPoint.

Pencil, Paper and an Internet Connection

It's important not to overcomplicate things. Sometimes, all you need is a piece of paper and a pencil to effectively put your ideas into action. I suggest using this method for your "every-once-in-a-while" type brainstorming, in conjunction with this extremely helpful article that shows you easy ways to map your thoughts and complete your projects.

Training

In a group setting, brainstorming and mind mapping training can go a long way. This field of corporate instruction is growing in popularity and could possibly benefit your team as well. Check out a list of training centers here.

You might think that brainstorming and mind mapping is as simple as thinking. But, just like anything in life, it requires practice and patience. With these tools you'll be able to get the most from your brain and perform at your best in your projects.
