The Secret to a Happy Back

Most of us sit in a chair for six to eight hours a day at work. We twist to pick up the phone. We hunch to scrutinize the computer screen. We awkwardly maneuver piles from one side of the desk to the other. And then we wonder why our backs are killing us!
The secret to a happy, healthy back is all in the chair you're using. In fact, your chair can have a serious impact on your productivity as well. It's not just about being comfortable. The right chair can prevent injury and help keep you functioning at full speed. Our good friends at Quill have a few tips to help us evaluate the chairs we're currently using, and possibly help us find a better one.
Lumbar Support
Does your chair support both your lower and upper back? One key consideration in the backrest is the lumbar support. This supports the natural curve of your spine by pushing the lower part of the chair out to support your back. Many chairs offer height-adjustable backrests that allow the user to customize the support based on his/her needs. A chair with the proper lumbar support allows you to sit up straight with relaxed shoulders and feel no stress on your upper back.
Seating
Is your chair adjustable for your height? While seated, you should be able to place both feet comfortably on the floor. Chairs with a waterfall edge will help promote leg circulation. Make sure the seat is wide enough and is the proper length to support your thighs. This will put the least amount of pressure on your knees.
Armrests
Armrests are often a personal preference. Some people prefer to use an armrest while others don't care for them. If you are accustomed to having armrests on your chair, make sure they support your arms while allowing your shoulders to be relaxed. You may want adjustable armrests that can be moved up and down, forward and back to fit your individual needs.
Chair Material
Is the material comfortable? Do you prefer chairs made from cloth material, leather or vinyl? Of course, you also have to consider the décor of your home or work space. You definitely want a chair that suits your needs but also complements your space.
Chair Base
Does the chair have wheels (otherwise known as casters) that swivel and allow you to move comfortably from one side of your desk to the other? This helps you move more naturally throughout the day.
Usability
Consider who is using the chair. Are you the only user or are there multiple people who sit in the chair on a daily basis? If multiple people use it, adjustable features are really a necessity. That way, one chair can comfortably fit multiple people with different body types and needs.
If you've reviewed this list and now suddenly realize that your chair could be the culprit for you back aches and pains, don't worry.
