Think Pink, Purchase Pink

Pink is the new orange! While orange used to be the color of October for its association with Halloween, pink is quickly stepping in to take the crown. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in support of this cause, many companies are selling pink products all month long.
What are pink products?
Pink products are products that are adorned with pink ribbons, colored pink, or sold with a promise to donate a portion of the proceeds to breast cancer research. According to an article featured in the Wall Street Journal, in 2005, pink products accounted for $35 million of the Susan G. Komen Foundation's $200 million in annual revenue.
When did it start?
Companies selling pink products and donating the proceeds to cancer research or awareness is growing in popularity. Today hundreds of products are sold each October to help the cause. This practice started in the 1990s, when Susan G. Komen for the Cure began working with a handful of corporations that they had partnered with the late 1980s as race sponsors to create ways to engage the general public. Susan G. Komen for the Cure now has more than 130 partners offering a wide range of products that provide breast cancer education and funding.

Check boxes, tags and fine print to find out what group is supported by your purchase. Sometimes the money goes directly to breast-cancer research, while other purchases may support free mammograms or "breast-cancer awareness." Watch for vague descriptions.
