Marketing Matters: How to Find Your "Tarket"

Are you looking for your "tarket?"It's a word I read online recently, and it's a combination of "target" and "market." It also defines the group of people who share common factors that would make them so interested in your product or service that they would be willing to pay for it.

Yes, that's who you want to get to know. But, how do you go about finding your tarket and making sure you speak directly to them? Here are the "who, what, why, where and how" of finding your tarket.

What's Your Niche?

Before you determine who you're going to market to, you need to consider what you do that's better than anyone else. Finding your niche means finding that one thing that you're passionate and knowledgeable about that no one else (or few people!) has discovered. Once you've identified it and determined that there's sufficient demand for it, then you need to discern what group of people would be interested in it.

Who Would Be Interested?

You know your specialty - what it is that makes you and your product unique. So, who cares? And, don't be afraid to exclude some people from your list. Your goal is to really focus on your tarket, which may mean turning other people away. After all, those who aren't that interested in your product probably won't buy it, anyway.

No, you need to determine whose needs aren't currently being met - and focus on them. They're your tarket. For instance, perhaps non-driving, sports-loving students under the age 30 will benefit from your product or service.

Why Do They Need You?

Understanding what makes your particular offering so special that people will clamor to get it is vital to understanding why they need you. You may have a product or service that's similar to something already on the market, but your goal should be to find that one thing that sets you apart from the competition.

Answering this question goes hand-in-hand with answering the question about who would be interested. Once you've discovered who needs you and why, you can determine the qualities of your ideal client and find your tarket.

Where Are They Located?

Nowadays, a lot of people probably think that their tarket is located online. But, if you're pitching to an older crowd, that might not be true; and even if your tarket is online, where online? There's a big, wide, wonderful space out there.

Consider that there are other places to find your tarket, too. Maybe they congregate at church or belong to a professional association. Or, maybe your tarket is younger people who are currently attending college. Sure, you can find them online, but perhaps they're studying a certain discipline or attending a unique school. If so, that's where you need to look for them.

How Do You Reach Them?

The best way to reach your tarket is to let them know that you exist. That may mean writing articles for the publication they read, attending their monthly meetings, or becoming a guest speaker for their association. Also, if your tarket has a website, visit it. Post in the discussion forums, write a blog, or place an ad online. However they typically receive information - snail mail, radio, etc. - is how you reach them.
